As I sit here writing and feeling the winter blues, I can’t help but daydream about visiting the island paradise of Negril, Jamaica. If I had a couple grand laying around that wasn’t already betrothed to something else, I would drop everything and hop on a plane tomorrow. But since I can’t, here are the top 10 reasons why you should visit Negril Jamaica:
1. It’s cheap to eat
Like, really cheap. Right now, one US dollar is worth $115 Jamaican dollars. So when you look at a menu (like the one below), and you see that the average price of a dinner plate is $500-700, that’s the equivalent of $4.35-$6.09 USD. A family of four could eat dinner at Sips and Bites for less than $18.
2. The food is amazing
Never in my life have I experienced food as delicious as the food Jamaica has to offer. There’s brown stew chicken, escovich snapper, ox tail stew, curried goat, fried chicken, conch soup, and of course jerk chicken. The service is generally slow (you are on island time after all!), but it’s worth the wait.
3. It’s cheap to sleep
Not only can you book a flight for as low as $350 a person round trip to Montego Bay and get a taxi round trip from MoBay to Negril for as little at $60 USD, but you can stay for as cheap at $30 a night (if you really want to). Most decent villas and rooms have a starting rate around $95-$130 a night, though, which is still really, really cheap. Of course, if you’re looking for an all-inclusive experience, you’ll be paying top-dollar just like you would anywhere else. But, that’s a huge waste of money because the small, local hotels are just as beautiful, and if you’re looking for the “all-inclusive experience” you might as well just go to Florida.
4. The beach
Negril is famous for its 7 mile beach. While the beach is actually closer to 5 miles long, it is one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. There is an unwritten rule in Negril that says no building can be higher than the tallest palm tree, and that has kept ugly skyscrapers and high-rise hotels away. Instead, the beach is peppered with small hotels and villa resorts, with restaurants, shops, and vendors in between.
5. It’s great for families with children
Negril offers not only the gorgeous beach, but tons of activities for kids. From a water park to jet skiing to parasailing, there are hundreds of different things to do. And for families with young kids, the beach is safe and provides hours of entertainment between building sand castles, going for walks, or just swimming in the waves.
6. The coffee
Jamaica boasts what is often considered the best coffee in the world. Jamaica’s Blue Mountain Coffee can go for more than $50 a pound here in the United States, but in Jamaica you can get it for next to nothing. Basically all restaurants and hotels in Negril serve Blue Mountain coffee, which will make that Folgers taste like swamp water when you get home.
7. The cliffs
The cliffs are the what really sets Negril apart from any other resort town in the Caribbean. Not only does Negril have that amazing beach, but on the west end, it has cliffs. The cliffs are home to world-famous restaurant and bar Rick’s Cafe and dozens of hotels that provide a more private, relaxing vacation. You can go cliff jumping, snorkeling, cave exploring, or just hang out by a seemingly-endless supply of infinity pools.
8. The sunsets
Negril is located on the south-western end of the country, giving it the perfect angle to watch the sun sink slowly into the sea. Other tourist towns in Jamaica such as Ocho Rios and Montego Bay do not get the same angle at sunset, which makes Negril the go-to vacation spot for watching the sun set.
9. The culture
Seriously. You can go anywhere in the Caribbean and get the sun and the sand. But Negril, Jamaica has the most amazing people. The people who live and work in Jamaica are kind, generous, and beautiful on the inside and out. The culture of Jamaica is vibrant, and the people in Negril are excellent representations of that.
10. Did I mention the sunsets?
Honestly, they are one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see in the natural world.
So what are you waiting for? Go book your trip right now and visit Negril Jamaica. You will be glad you did!
